This eliminates the need for separate split lock washer (like the factory used) and it's one less part for you to keep track of. Plus, you don't have to get upset because you dropped that tiny little lock washer and lost it. Oops!
These new mechanical lock nuts in the MrMiataParts kit have a serrated locking feature on the flange nut that ensures a strong lock once tightened and no need for a lock washer.
Another bonus is the flat that is ground onto the bolt head to ensure a positive locking of the bolt against the differential flange so that you know you installed it the right way and the bolt holds itself in place while you tighten the nut.
